Sound Republic: Splendour 2011

Our guide to the Splendour timetable

Our guide to the Splendour timetable (Photo: Michelle Smith - Brisbane Times)

Timetable looking like a confusing mish-mash of names you only half recognise? We've chartered the territory and come up with our suggested run of acts to keep you busy at this year's Splendour in the Grass.

So you know who Kanye West is, Modest Mouse had that cool song when you were 17 and you just found out the theme tune for Entourage was written by Jane's Addiction. What in the hell do you see for the other 68 hours of festival? We've taken a peek through the line-up and come up with a path that we reckon features some of the best names on the bill. You can download the pdf of the timetable here...we leave the gaps up to you to sample the odds and ends (read: bars) of the festival, and suggest you check out the lot below.

Friday:
Kimbra -> Warpaint -> Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears -> The Hives -> Mogwai

Starting the festival with unique Aussie pop-songstress Kimbra is a good idea; watch as she builds interesting walls of acapella vocal layers replete with blissful pop hooks. The darker indie sounds of Warpaint will bring you through the morning to the old-school funk of Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, one of the acts on the bill who doesn't merge into the mash of indie/dance acts that fill the line-up. The Hives will bring their energetic indie-rock through the eve into post-rock kings of atmosphere, Mogwai. Kanye West will be up at the amphitheatre for the atmosphere...and the spectacle may be worth catching, but is excess and backing dancers really why you go to a music festival?

Saturday:
Ghoul -> Gareth Liddiard / Fitz and the Tantrums -> Foster the People -> The Grates / Isobell Campbell & Mark Lanegan -> Gomez / Thievery Corporation -> Jane's Addiction

Sydney's Ghoul could be one of your favourite local discoveries, while Gareth Liddiard's stunning storytelling is an event that you have to see at least once (plus we'll be there with fingers crossed for a Drones reunion...not that it's likely at all.) If Liddiard's introspection doesn't prove to be right for you early afternoon enthusiasm, Fitz and the Tantrums' brand of funk and soul will bring you there. Inspired by Motown and 70's funk with the exclusion of guitars, these guys are a definite catch on the bill. Foster the People will bring the dance cred, while The Grates / Isobell Campbell clash is again dependent on your mood- the blistering energy of Patience Hodgson, or the gorgeous duelling vocals of Campbell and Lanegan? English genre-mashers Gomez will be well worth the appearance, while their clashing set with Thievery Corporation will depend on whether you're after DJ's or guitars at that time of the night. Making the trek up to the Amphi for Jane's Addiction will be a grand way to finish the evening...if nothing else, for the 90's mindfuck that will be Been Caught Stealing.

Sunday:
Grouplove -> Leader Cheetah -> Liam Finn -> The Vines / Oh Mercy -> Elbow -> Noah and the Whale -> Pulp / Devendra Banhardt

Reverbed choral vocals? Grouplove will check off the late 00's indie trends for you, while Adelaide's Leader Cheetah are coming off the back of a fantastic new album making them worth catching while they're on the rise. Liam Finn's bizarre live show is always worth seeing, while The Vines / Oh Mercy clash will feed on either your retrospective teen angst or civilised chin scratching emotions. Elbow's Amphitheatre set will be an incredible meeting of sights and sounds, while Noah and the Whale will be a relaxing way to bring in the evening. And then there's Pulp, who are for many, the true headliners of this festival and worth seeing if not solely for the packed amphiteatre sing-a-long for Disco 2000. If you can make it back down the hill in time, Devanda Banhardt's quirky folk will be an awesome way to finish the night...and if not, there's always Coldplay to end the night all karaoke-like...but you know...we'd advise against that derivative, sexless moan. And I guess  we'll see you there in less than a week's time!
