After announcing Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes and a handful of others last month, the Falls Festival of Music & Arts has added a handful of very big names to their rapidly growing roster.

As the country's most well established New Year's camping festival, Falls has been a beacon for some of the biggest touring internationals on the festival circuit. Bringing in 2012 will be no different, with English indie-rockers Arctic Monkeys and folk gods Fleet Foxes heading their first announcement. This morning though, Falls dropped the news of another handful of names set to drag the punters south to Victoria or Tassie this New Year's Eve.

Dinosaur Jr front-man J Mascis has been announced to return to Australia for the first time since 2009, this time in support of his brilliant solo record Several Shades of Why. Alongside him will be Canadian electronic juggernauts Crystal Castles, Sydney hype-mongers Papa Vs Pretty, the words and whines of Josh Pyke, The Wonderful World of DJ Yoda and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. This is in addition to other acts announced previously including Easy Star All Stars, Arj Barker, Tim Finn and The Jezabels.

With a little under 60 more acts to be announced and a couple of headliners short of Falls' typically massive line-up, there are sure to be many more reasons to get excited about this years festival. We'll be putting our bets on an appearance by My Morning Jacket, an act well overdue for an Australian tour and set to tour their new record Circuital. Odds are also good for an appearance by Iron & Wine and the possible double appearance of a couple of Splendour acts as seems to have been the case the last couple of years.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival runs over three days across New Year's at Lorne, Victoria and Marion Bay in Tasmania. Stay tuned to Sound Republic for more from this finest of festivals!

Full line-up thus far:

Arctic Monkeys
Arj Barker
Easy Star All Stars
Fleet Foxes
Tim Finn
The Jezabels
Crystal Castles
J Mascis
Josh Pyke
Papa vs Pretty
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Wonderful World of DJ Yoda.
