Kool & The Gang and Roy Ayers Announced for Playground Weekender

In a teaser move not too dissimilar from Meredith's Dirty Three announcement, Sydney's Playground Weekender has announced pop-funk and disco legends Kool & The Gang and Roy Ayers as a sneak peak from their upcoming line-up announcement.

It's almost October, the weather's starting to heat up and in fitting with the Earth's rotation around the sun, the festival announcements are rolling out in kind. Meredith and Falls have sold out, Big Day Out rumours are circling...and out of nowhere, Sydney's favourite live-in festival, Playground Weekender just dropped a couple of bombshells in preview of its full line-up announcement due enticingly soon.

Heading the line-up are two acts of longstanding acclaim in Roy Ayers and Kool & The Gang. Both proponents of free jazz, R&B and funk throughout the sixties, both acts were instrumental in forging disco into the late 70's. With dance and electro an absolute staple of today's Australian music industry, hosting these pioneers on our shores is not only fitting, but sure to get a few fluoro headbanded faces grinning coming February 2011.

Held over the weekend of the 18th, 19th and 20th of February and set for its fifth anniversary, Playground is guaranteed to drop an incredible line-up as these early announcements suggest. We've been massive fans of this festival since its inception and have loads of coverage from the past couple of years that you can check out here: Playground 2009 - Review and Photo's, Playground 2010 - Review and Photo's.

Be sure to keep an eye on their future line-up announcements as well as ticketing and accommodation opportunities which have ranged from houseboats to teepee's over years prior.
