On a break from The Beautiful Girls, in 2008 Mat McHugh ventured out solo to release a low-key album of the sort of softer music that was a hallmark of The Beautiful Girls' earlier records. Seperatista! was born and offered a mellow alternative to TBG's increasingly stylised and genre-hopping material. Now on the road in the USA, Mat McHugh has let fans know that he's offering the album as a free download to finally get it out there and heard.

The album's 2008 release was followed up with a small Australian tour and before you could blink McHugh was back at work with The Beautiful Girls on what became their latest album, Spooks.

Now, in the thick of a mammoth US tour, McHugh had this to say recently on Facebook:

Been thinking about my solo record a lot lately and how it kind of flew under the radar a bit. I love this record and I want to make sure it is heard. So, while we are on tour in the US you can get the whole record free. Share the love and pass this link onto anyone you think would like it. Grace and Love, Mat.

And so, if you didn't get your hands on Mat McHugh's Seperatista! back in 2008 when it was released, you can grab it for free via Bandcamp here.

Soulshine reviewed the album back in 2008:

You can be forgiven for expecting a surfy-esque collection of acoustic numbers as was common during The Beautiful Girls' early years where their rise paralleled (even preempted) that of Jack Johnson. Here McHugh has carved out a sound unique and not easily compared to anyone other than perhaps his own band. Indeed with the constant genre-bending of TBG, if it weren't for the changes to the backing band, McHugh could just have easily released this under the band's name and leave even the most steadfast of fans satisfied.
