Born in New South Wales, raised on the Gold Coast in Queensland and now a resident of the Victorian Capital, Melbourne, 23-year old, Ryan Murphy unleashes his new band in a series of residency dates in September at the Wesley-Anne… introducing THE LION AND RYAN!

Best described musically by Murphy as “pop with soul and blues connotations”, all it takes is one live show and you’re immediately struck by his charming and disarming stage presence. “It’s a demeanour that makes him a likable and engaging performer,” writes Scene Magazine (QLD).

The move to Melbourne in late 2009 took Murphy out of his comfort zone but says that it’s a move that’s made the band stronger musically. “Its opened me up to a lot of different ways of life. I grew up in a small town and always lived in tiny communities so as you can imagine experiencing living in the city is really exciting”.

“I still get a shock when I see forty or fifty people in a bar at 11pm on a weekday enjoying live music – Melbourne has a great appreciation for artists so it’s a good feeling to be a part of that community”.

The Lion and Ryan have already built a reputation for their live shows through key performances including the pre-game entertainment for the 20,000-plus crowd at the Gold Coast Titans Stadium, a main slot at The Peace Festival’s Peace Wave Concert performing alongside The Boat People, the Woodford Folk Festival and more recently, supporting Little River Band’s Glenn Shorrock for his 2010 tour.

For Ryan, the stage is where he is most comfortable: “I've done loads of gigs over the past few years, I don't get as nervous up on stage as I did before, performing just seems like a part of my life now,” says Ryan. “I try to stay as true to myself on stage as possible, there is nothing worse than watching an artist that is trying to be something they’re not!”

His recent relocation to Melbourne and his collaborations with some highly sought after music producers and song writers has meant an infusion of new influences which will be unleashed in 2011 and an extensive touring schedule to bring the sound of Ryan Murphy to the forefront of Australia’s music industry.

“[Ryan] possesses a quality of songwriting and arrangement well beyond Murphy’s young years,” writes Rave Magazine.
