The word first broke from the Broken Social Scene camp a few years ago that some sort of zany film project was in the works when the message went out for Toronto locals to submit videos of their summers. All that was known was that some kinda film was being made surrounding an open-air BSS gig in their home-town, and that it was being directed by indie director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool, Hard Core Logo.) Now, completely out of the blue for anyone completely out of the loop, it's been getting warm reviews after its debut at SXSW, the trailer of which, you can check out below.

So the word is that it's a well-made film surrounding a fictional, 'oh no you're moving to Paris but I love you,'  one-night-stand love story with the backdrop of actual concert footage of Broken Social Scene's 2009 open-air Toronto gig, which was supposedly friggin cool. Of course, the entire film's score will be made up of various moments from BSS' discography, which will at least make for an aurally satisfying experience if the love story grows tired.

Essentially, this is a pretty cool moment in music, it's a fresh take on the live music DVD which, whilst often coming up with results, isn't necessarily something that's entirely entertaining from the couch. There's been no announcement regarding an Australian release as yet, but considering the band is hitting the country for Splendour in July, it seems logical that the film will arrive sometime in the not too distant future.

In the mean-time, here's a taste of Broken Social Scene's live show from SXSW 2010, with interviews included.
