New Clare Bowditch album 'Modern Day Addiction'
26 May 2010
Clare Bowditch and her new seven-piece band is set to release her fourth studio album Modern Day Addiction on 13 August 2010. The album is a musical departure for Bowditch, a new genre she describes as ‘political disco’, upbeat songs about serious and important issues relating to living in the modern world and being human. Partly recorded in Berlin with legendary producer Mocky (Feist, Gonzales, Jamie Lidell, Peaches) in the almighty famous Hansa studios (Bowie, Iggy, U2), and then finished in Clare's backyard shed by husband Marty Brown, the album carries an aura of the Berlin underground.
Bowditch says that Modern Day Addiction is ‘‘the album that we’ve probably spent the most time on out of all of our albums – it’s been the most thoroughly developed... and was a completely unplanned creative adventure’’. It’s because of Bowditch’s creative and intrepid attitude that Modern Day Addiction will be one of the most memorable albums of 2010.
The first taste of Modern Day Addiction came in late 2009 in the form of ‘The Start of War’. Co-produced by Bowditch, Marty Brown, and Mick Harvey (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) the track offered an honest, stripped-back arrangement, with most of the song’s tension being drawn from the panoramic overlaying of the backing vocals.
The second single ‘Bigger Than The Money’ from Bowditch’s forthcoming album concerns a late night argument over payment for a beverage. Tempers flared, too much was said, voices got lost.. Enter Bowditch, “I went to a European Doctor (being in Europe at the time you see), who gave me an official note stating: ‘This woman cannot talk, whisper, or make any noise, under Doctor’s orders’. Being naturally rebellious, I defied the Doctor and made up this song, which I whispered into a secret recording device on my phone.” The explosive clip was written and directed by award-winning young gun Kess Broekman-Dattner, check it out here.
Already, ‘Bigger Than The Money’ was the most played track on triple j in its first week on air.
Anticipation is high for the next installment of Bowditch, with each of her previous albums landing the coveted triple j feature album, she won an ARIA for Best Female Artist in 2006 and was the #1 runner up in the International Songwriting Competition in the singer songwriter category judged by Tom Waits and Robert Smith.
