Break out the diary, cancel your late February plans, and surprise your loved one(s) with tickets to something truly wonderful and intimate: the one and only Rufus Wainwright is returning to Sydney for a very special, one-off evening featuring our prodigious wunderkind in solo piano and vocal mode. No further tour dates are to be announced.

The setting for this once-in-a-lifetime, exquisite affair is appropriately the rather gorgeous Verbrugghen Hall – the superb concert hall with world-class acoustics and seating for just 500 people at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The UK’s Observer Music Monthly might well have captured the essence of Mr. Wainwright’s entire career when it recently remarked that his latest and fifth studio album, Release The Stars, is "complex, melodramatic, ambitious, vain, beautiful and frequently magnificent!"

Since then, Rufus Wainwright has released his second live solo album and accompanying DVD, Milwaukee at Last!!! – again to rave reviews – and will be releasing a highly anticipated new studio album later in 2010.  It is very clear that Rufus Wainwright is a major talent of the 21st Century; the question now is how far will this musical flair take him.

As music bible Mojo Magazine attests in its Release The Stars review, "Like (Brian Wilson’s) Smile, it extends the language of pop, setting a fearsome standard for anyone equal to the challenge of matching his limitless invention."

But the important point to take from this announcement is this – do not delay in securing your tickets for this very special concert.  If the 2008 Rufus Wainwright Australian tour is anything to go by – his return in 2010 will no doubt be the absolute musical highlight of your calendar year!
