A month out from the 2009/10 Woodford Folk Festival, and Soulshine brings you the first of our Woodford files, an ongoing series focusing on some of the highlights of the festival. First up, one of Woodford's biggest acts: the John Butler Trio.

John Butler returns to his old stomping ground of Woodford for a homecoming of sorts, sporting a new look (old news, but it is his first dreadlockless Woodford), a new band and a new sound.

Reuniting with Nicky Bomba on drums and joined by The Ray Mann Three's Byron Luiters on bass, John Butler is back and showcasing a mix of new and classic tracks. The first single from his latest album "April Uprising" is doing the rounds right now, and it sees the Trio move in a funkier, hipper and more pop-influenced direction than before, while most definitely remaining true to what has made the group such a success story.

Probably the most successful artist to play Woodford, Butler's thankfully one that has never outgrown it. Playing the Amphitheatre on Monday 28 December at 9:45pm and, like his 2006/07 appearance, returning the following afternoon at The Grande at 2:40pm in what is sure to be the most crowded you'll ever see this venue.

For the latest playing schedule and more info, see www.woodfordfolkfestival.com.
