For the first time ever in Australia, the legendary avant-groove trio Medeski, Martin & Wood playing the Hi-Fi ballroom on Friday 29 January.

Brooklyn based Medeski Martin & Wood are one of the most dynamic jazz fusion groups around today drawing inspirations for all different styles outside the jazz realm – everything from funk to hip hop and further.

The trio comprises of keyboard/organ/piano player John Medeski, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood who came together in 1991 after relocating from the prestigious New England conservatory to the grittiness of Brooklyn with the intentions of exploring the New York scene. What resulted was a swarm of gigs through which they developed their sound and their debut album ‘Notes from the Underground’ which was released in 1992.

Since then the trio have released a plethora of albums as well as teaming up with legendary guitarist John Scofield, recording a children’s album and starting their own independent label – ‘Indirecto’, the first release of which was ‘Out Loud’ in 2006 with John Scofield.

Most recently, Medeski Martin & Wood have released ‘The Radiolarian Series’ – a three part album series recorded at the end  of each leg of their three part 2008 ‘Viva la Evolution’ Tour which will be available in Australia through Fuse Music.

Taking to the Hi-Fi stage before MMW will be Brighton sensation Fink with his trio. Signed to the Ninja Tune label, Fink released his debut album in 2001, ‘Fresh Produce’, however it was his 2006 follow up ‘Biscuits for Breakfast’ that gained him wider recognition. Fink has written with renowned artists including John Legend and Amy Winehouse and released his fourth album ‘Sort Of Revolution’ in 2009.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see these two fine trios playing music from the world of jazz, soul, folk and everything else in between on the same stage.
