‘Exegesis’ is the first taste of this Melburnian’s long-awaited second LP, and was produced by Scott Horscroft (The Sleepy Jackson, The Panics). Over three years in the making, it started its life as a demo for a UK record label, but was shelved following the break-up of Cummings’ backing band, The Long Way Home. Eventually though, he picked the song back to its bare bones and handed it over to mixer Tony Espie (The Avalanches, Cut Copy, Mercy Arms), to finally bring it back to life.

exegesis [ek-si-jee-sis]
noun (pl. -ses |-sēz|)
critical explanation or interpretation of a text.

The new single from Tobias Cummings, finds a songwriter looking for answers to the big questions.

Playful and searching, it skirts the edges of the dancefloor, staying mainly in the shadows, where the mystery is. But the shimmer and roll of the music belie the bite in the lyrics, tripping you up when you thought you’d figured out the next step. Sonically, it’s a bold step up from Cummings‘ 2006 debut (the critically acclaimed and AMP nominated ‘Join the Dots’), with cut-up beats, unexpected textures, handclaps, tinkling piano and ringing synths. All adding sparkle to Cummings’ yearning, soaring vocals and telecaster jangle, and hinting at the more experimental bent to the new album.

Sure, Exegesis does throw up more questions than it answers, but you must have a little mystery, no?

The song is available on 7” vinyl, and for a limited time is free to download from www.tobiascummings.com

Tobias Cummings and his new live band will launch the single on Saturday the 5th of September at The Curtain Ballroom.
