The next artist in Soulshine's ongoing series The Woodford Files is The Gin Club, an eclectic group hailing from Brisbane that create their own unique sound from a combination of folk, rock, pop, blues, country and pretty much anything else you can think of.

The Gin Club are a musical collective based in Brisbane, Australia who perform an eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, blues, country, psych, prog, slowcore, and everything in between. Since their formation in 2003 they have toured Australia, travelled abroad to the U.S, Canada and New Zealand, and played with acts as diverse as Paul Kelly, The Drones, Tim Rogers, You Am I, Pete Murray, Iron & Wine, Lambchop, Midlake, Band of Horses and Laura Veirs, and released three albums to critical acclaim.

Their most recent release is Junk, an ambitious double album featuring 26 original songs by 7 singer/songwriters. A sprawling, ambitious affair, Junk covers a breathtaking amount of musical ground, from rousing gospel rock’n’roll rave ups, to mariachi revenge fantasies to string laden death ballads, all infused with a distinctly Australian feel.

At the recent 2008 QSong Awards they demonstrated the depth and breadth of their songwriting ability by taking out both the Rock and Folk/Ballad categories for “Ten Paces Away” &“You, Me & The Sea” respectively. “Ten Paces Away” also won the overall Song of the Year award.

Influenced by the attitudes of artists such as The Band and The Wu-Tang Clan, The Gin Club feature a constantly shifting line up, both in the studio and when performing live. On stage the band can feature anywhere from 2 to 10 members playing various combinations of acoustic and electric guitars, organ, piano, cello, banjo, mandolin, violin, saxophone and drums.

The eclectic, sprawling sound of The Gin Club can be heard at Woodford Folk Festival this year on Saturday at The Grande at 1:20PM, and the following Monday at Bazaar at 10:00PM. Miss them at your own peril!
